School History:

In 1862, the first school was built in Mt. Carmel.  it was a one-room log building located about one and a half miles north of Mt. Carmel.

About fifteen years later, a larger school was built closer to the church on the Huron/Middlesex boundary.

Around 1880, another school was built.  it was a larger frame building located across the boundary line in Huron County on the present school property.

In 1906, a larger school was needed so a new brick, two-room school was built at the same location.  The frame school was moved across the road to be used as a high school and community hall.  At that time, grades nine and ten began in Mt. Carmel.

In 1924, the Ursuline Sisters came to teach in Mt. Carmel.  they purchased the home of Joe Glavin and converted it into a convent.

Around 1935, grades 10-13 were added to the two-room high school.

In 1945, pupils from St. Peter's on Hwy#4 came to Mt. Carmel.  Later Shipka and Khiva schools were closed and the catholic pupils transferred to Mt. Carmel.

In 1956, the present school was built.  The red brick building, containing only three rooms, was the pride and joy of Mount Carmel.  A ceremony was held to open the school and dignitaries from local and provincial government were in attendance.  The C.W.L. placed a large statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in the main hallway, where it remains today.  This year marks the 50th Anniversary for our school as it exists today.

In 1961, two rooms were added to the school and in 1964 two more rooms were built on.

In 1966, the high school was discontinued.

In 1968, the enrollment continued to increase as Grand Bend pupils were bused to Mount Carmel.  Also in 1968, the Mount Carmel School Section became part of the Huron-Perth Separate School Board.

In 1971, kindergarten was offered in Mount Carmel for the first time.

By 1977, the last of the Ursuline Sisters had left, leaving an entirely lay staff.  Mr. Gary Birmingham was the first lay principal of the school.
